I tell my clients this piece of advice nearly every week.
Your global teams don’t care too much about whether your English is “perfect”, whether you used “advanced vocabulary”, or whether or not you sound exactly like a native speaker.
Yes, clear pronunciation and a basic grasp of any language used in communication are essential, but too many managers who already have this basic grasp focus too much on this instead of everything else, which ironically leads to less effective, less confident, and less successful communication.
In general, they care more about the CONTENT of your message, your meeting PLAN, how this meeting is RELEVANT to THEM, WHAT the meeting OUTCOMES are, and WHETHER a meeting is EVEN NECESSARY.
My clients see this all the time firsthand, even if you use “perfect” English and “advanced” expressions, those expressions won’t impress anybody if your meeting doesn’t have clear relevancy, purpose, and outcomes.
All you’ll most likely create is a group of disgruntled people wondering why the heck you interrupted their work and turned what could’ve been a simple email or quick 15-minute chat into a 2-hour drama.
Focus less on using complicated, “advanced”, and “fancy” words and content if none of it is relevant to your meetings with global teams.
Focus more on being RELEVANT, using SIMPLE language (yes, “simple” English is often better than complicated), and creating a plan that’s EASY to UNDERSTAND and IMPLEMENT.
Speak in a way that is so easy to understand that even a child could understand you.
It’s often said within the teaching community that if you can’t explain or teach something, especially a deep or complex topic, then that means you don’t understand it well enough yet and need to spend more time both better understanding that topic as well as improving how you communicate it.
To an enormous degree, this is SO true, and is so crucial to ensure you are applying this to your own communication.
This will get you far better results from meetings with global teams.
Yes, I understand, you have tons of data, professional knowledge, and expertise that needs to be shared, and that’s no problem.
But keep it simple, relevant, and concise.
Not only will this make it more likely that your audience takes the action you want them to take as well as genuinely support you, but they’ll also appreciate that you respect and value their time too.
It’s on you, the meeting leader, to make sure you communicate clearly, concisely, make sure your team understands, and that you don’t waste their time.
Make your meeting presentation, structure, and leadership so easy to implement that even a CHILD could understand you.
