1 key to better, more confident, and clearer communication in English at work:
Don’t be shy. đ
Yes, it’s often that simple.
While it’s important to incorporate strategic, intentional, and efficient learning into your routine if you want to optimize your Business English communication for your career, it’s equally important to understand that you need to balance this with just getting started, one challenge I’ve seen is this:
Over the years of working with life science managers and directors around the globe, I’ve seen a pattern with my clients:
They often chase perfection, which is literally impossible, there is always room for improvement. In other words, we’re always in a state of imperfection.
Thus, you need to balance studying and researching with TAKING ACTION NOW, only then can you make the quickest, most thorough improvements.
USE the English you have now.
Have CONFIDENCE and COURAGE that you CAN communicate.
Know it’s NORMAL to make mistakes in a foreign language and that we NEED to make some mistakes to ultimately improve.
(I make mistakes ALL the time in Chinese and Japanese and it’s only through this process that I can learn, improve, and ultimately communicate more fluently over time)
Use SIMPLE and EASILY UNDERSTANDABLE language instead of “advanced” expressions and fancy jargon that only cause confusion.
BELIEVE and have CONVICTION that your message, ideas, and thoughts are worth sharing with global teams.
SUMMARIZE, PARAPHRASE, TAKE NOTES, and proactively do everything you can to understand, this will help you comprehend more.
If you don’t understand something, it’s OK and NORMAL, simply request the other party to repeat, clarify, and even use simpler language if needed.
(Even native English speakers misunderstand each other and need to repeat and paraphrase!)
You can still invest in improving your English communication skills and keep improving over time,
But don’t wait until tomorrow to use your current communication abilities.
Otherwise, you’ll probably never get started.
So starting this week, if you haven’t already,
Use what you have now, and improve as you go.
I know you can do it, managers!
